Take the Next Step

If I could do this all over again, would I be a financial advisor? The answer is a resounding "yes." I enjoy this career very much.

It's a great time to join Ameriprise Financial

Now is a great time to take the next step and join the leader in financial planning to achieve your long-term career goals. At Ameriprise Financial, you'll find real opportunity for growth, greater independence, and outstanding income potential. And you'll discover the rewards and satisfaction associated with helping clients plan to achieve their dreams.

The hiring and selection process

If you decide to become an Ameriprise financial advisor, you'll find our selection process is thorough. We want to make sure this is the career that will offer you the most opportunities. A local leader will conduct initial screening, interviews and subsequent tests, such as a marketing plan exercise. If you meet the criteria, you may be offered a position. At that time, we'll sponsor you with FINRA and help you prepare to take your exams. Once you obtain your licenses and successfully pass a background check, you'll be hired into pre-appointment. You'll receive comprehensive training for 10 weeks to prepare for your appointment as an Ameriprise financial advisor.

Sponsorship

Qualifying candidates may be sponsored by Ameriprise Financial as they gain the required credentials to become a financial advisor at our company. Candidates in our sponsorship program can continue to work at their present job (provided it does not conflict with our No Dual-Registration policy), work part time, or choose to devote themselves completely to studying. Regardless of your study preference, we want to help you acquire the necessary credentials as soon as possible and will offer support and encouragement along the way.

The sponsorship phase begins with your completion of the necessary credential forms. These forms need to be completed, submitted and approved before Ameriprise Financial will sponsor you for the necessary security registrations with the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) and state security and insurance licensing authorities. Your sponsorship period begins after Ameriprise Financial submits your U-4 form to FINRA. Your sponsorship window is open for 120 days and you must obtain your Series 7 license within 90 days after your sponsorship window is opened. Full licensing must be obtained within 120 days to be hired. Many of our sponsored candidates complete the program and are hired within 90 days. Your local area office will provide you with a recommended schedule for progressing through the registration and licensing process.

Pre-appointment

During your first 10 weeks at Ameriprise Financial, you'll be engaged in pre-appointment activities and training. You'll engage in both virtual and self-study training, and record your progress on weekly checklists. Each week of your pre-appointment training is organized to reinforce what you've learned, find out how you're feeling, share tips to help you run your practice, and prepare you for the week ahead.

  • Week One
Your training will focus on orientation to the company, compliance and lead generation.
  • Week Two
You'll learn about lead generation and marketing, your two most important activities during pre-appointment.
  • Week Three
Your training will again focus on generating leads along with our financial planning process and consumer social styles.
  • Week Four
You'll learn about compensation, benefits, basic financial planning and marketing.
  • Week Five
This week you'll focus on developing the interpersonal skills required to engage clients and prospects in conversation and encourage them to share their dreams and goals. You'll also learn about data gathering and questioning techniques.
  • Week Six
You'll focus on data gathering, referrals and conceptual selling — skills that will help you build momentum as you progress toward appointment.
  • Week Seven
You'll gain in-depth knowledge of three important products: mutual funds, insurance and annuities.
  • Week Eight
Success as a financial advisor requires strong, long-term client relationships, and this week your training will continue to focus on important relationship-building skills: listening to clients and being attuned to their emotional cues.
  • Week Nine
Your training will focus on practice management, where you'll begin to prepare your marketing plan, and basic client service.
  • Week 10
Your final week of pre-appointment will focus on simplified account opening, client management system basics and your appointment. You'll also develop your individual goals for the next year.
You are then appointed an Ameriprise financial advisor

At this point in the process, you've achieved the final and most important step. You're on your way to a career that offers outstanding career and income potential, with the opportunity to create and grow your own practice. Your future success will be determined by your hard work, the client relationships you build, and your drive.
