A day in the life of an advisor

As an Ameriprise financial advisor, your days will include a variety of different activities. Building your client base is a key activity, so prospecting is a part of every financial advisor's daily routine, whether you're conducting a financial seminar for potential clients, meeting with a civic organization to develop relationships within your community, or taking an existing client and some of their friends to dinner to get to know your clients better and be introduced to potential clients.

Once your client list begins to grow, you'll find that more of your time is spent focusing on your client's specific financial needs. This includes conducting initial information gathering meetings, developing detailed financial plans for your clients and consistently following up with each of your clients. Many financial advisors find this to be the most satisfying part of the job.

The following is an example of a typical day in the life of an Ameriprise financial advisor.

  • Training session with Field Vice President

    8:00 a.m.
  • Prospecting and follow-up calls to clients

    9:00 a.m.
  • Creating a financial plan for latest client

    10:30 a.m.
  • Attending Ameriprise Lunch and Learn

    Noon
  • Meeting with prospective client

    2:00 p.m.
  • Meeting prospective client with Dream Book® guide.

    3:30 p.m.
  • Planning a marketing event

    5:00 p.m.
  • Dining with client and friends

    6:00 p.m.
Your responsibilities will change over time.

As your career and your practice grow, you'll find the time you spend prospecting, serving existing clients and managing your practice changes as well.
